Edo people are not difficult to read. We argue loudly in markets, complain endlessly in buses, and joke about politics at beer parlours, yet we possess a sharp instinct for change. We know when governance shifts its posture long before analysts give it a name.
One such shift many ordinary citizens are already sensing under Monday Okpebholo is a lowering of the political voice. Less theatre. Less public quarrelling. More attention to the quiet, uncelebrated labour of restoring order.
When salaries arrive with greater regularity, households rebalance themselves. The payment of a thirteenth-month salary and the steady employment of more workers do more than raise income; they restore morale and invite commitment. Attention to roads long abandoned reduces fuel costs, saves time, and eases daily stress. Treating schools and hospitals as essentials rather than announcements brings relief not just to families, but to entire communities. These are not achievements meant for billboards; they are improvements measured in daily survival.
Edo has known periods when governance resembled permanent combat—executive against legislature, authority against tradition, power against patience, technocrats against politicians. That kind of politics drains the people before it exhausts itself. Calm leadership is not weakness; it is discipline. It is the conscious decision to conserve energy for work rather than waste it on noise. States rarely falter for lack of effort; they falter when noise is mistaken for strength.
Citizens are also watching fairness. Not fairness as rhetoric, but fairness as distribution, balance, and attention. They see it in the renovation of Oba Market alongside similar upgrades in Jattu and Ekpoma. They notice it when major public investments move concurrently across the state—industrial activity in Edo South, health and educational institutions in Edo Central, and upgraded central hospitals in Edo North. When governance appears even-handed, disagreement does not disappear, but resistance softens.
Action alone, however, is insufficient. Government must also explain itself—plainly and without condescension. People want to know not only that the bus is moving, but where it is headed. Order may calm a state, but clarity is what carries it forward, because a government that explains its movement prevents resistance before it is born.
